Special Education
Brookfield R-III School District provides special education and related services to students identified as disabled under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and who require such services in order to receive a free and appropriate public education. Special education programs and related services are provided for students who have been found eligible with the following educational disabilities: autism, deaf-blindness, deafness and hearing impairments, emotional disturbance, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, other health impairment (OHI), orthopedic impairment, specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, visual impairment, and young child with development delays. Services are available for all eligible students ages 5 (kindergarten eligible) through age 21.
In 2016-2017, Brookfield Special Education department served 135 students. Department staff includes 2 speech/language pathologists, 3 elementary special education teachers, 2 middle school special education teachers, 2 high school special education teachers, and 15 paraprofessionals.
Early Childhood Special Education
Brookfield R-III School District provides special education and related services to eligible students with identified disabilities as early as a child's third birthdate. Special education and related services for pre-school age is referred to as Early Childhood Special Education. Early Childhood Special Education services are developmentally appropriate and individualized to address the unique strengths and needs of the child, with families being an essential part of that team. Once a child has reached the age to be eligible to attend kindergarten (age 5), services are transitioned to the K-12 Special Education program.
Brookfield R-III employs one early childhood special education teacher and one ECSE speech/language pathologist. In addition to district children, the Brookfield ECSE program coordinates the provision of early childhood special education services with other Linn County schools, as well as local Head Start programs.
